Types of "Web Designers"
By Val Trisler, Waupaca Computer Consulting, LLC
-
People with only a design background
These are the graphic designers that decide they can make a living creating web sites. They create
very pretty designs with lots of graphics. Their sites are typically very slow loading and not well
optimized. They don't realize that search engines can't "read" pictures and graphics and therefore
they will not get good rankings on searches.
-
People with only a programming background
These are the people that want their sites to do "cool stuff". They're sitting on souped up machines
that can handle all of this. They don't necessarily think about the end user who is running Windows
98 on a 450-mghz machine and has a dial up connection to the Internet.
-
Wannabes
These are the people that dabble in web sites. They have discovered a program such as FrontPage and
found out that they can create a web site, so now they believe they are ready to create web sites
for businesses. They typically aren't able to create a web page without FrontPage because they don't
know anything about HTML. Therefore if FrontPage messes something up, they don't know how to correct
it.
-
Well rounded web programmers
These people may or may not have a design background and they may or may not have a programming
background. They may or may not use a program such as FrontPage. If they do, you will find that they
use it for the purposes of faster development and then they tweak it and take out all of the
unnecessary nonsense that a program like that inserts into your code. In other words, they actually
know HTML. They understand that graphics should ONLY be used when they serve a purpose. They
understand that today's surfers are more sophisticated than they were 10 years ago. They want
quality information, not to be entertained with animated graphics. They know the proper use of
titles, descriptions and meta tags. They understand that each search engine works slightly
differently and that there are things that you can do for one to help you get better placement and
that it won't help you at all in the next one. They know that in order for a site to be successful,
they are going to have to understand a little bit about the business they are creating the site for
and also understand that business' customer. Basically what these people have is an understanding of
marketing on the web.
